It’s Only Talk (Sundance film guide entry)
Bore-fest. Oh man, I could barely make it through this one. Lots of coffee and a couple of jager shots at the No Name beforehand didn’t help. I was completely vibrating. Not a good state of mind for a slow-paced, delicate Japanese film about a young woman with manic depression.
Now I’m normally a huge Japanophile. I love slow, drawn out scenes with little action aside from watching the actors’ emotions evolve. This just goes to prove that Japanese literature just doesn’t always translate to film…
It wasn’t a complete loss, though. The saving grace is the cho kawaii Shinobu Terajima who puts in a truly notable performance.
